Cathy Burke

Cathy Burke

In her practice she explores the fragile charm found in nature’s process of regeneration, looking at the rugged beauty found in the constant cycle of decay and renewal - there is a certain aesthetic found in the detritus and even more so in the following resurgence.
Through drawing, she investigates the landscape, botanical forms and the ocean to create pieces that display a sense of natural contours, surfaces and movement.
Using stoneware clay, she slabs build and manipulates the form, then finish with textured and volatile glazes to emulate dramatic oceans, vibrant vegetation and delicate mosses and lichens. The desired outcome is an expression of natures splendour within the vulnerable position of our environment.

Cathy Burke is a multi-award winning ceramicist, commended for her sharp forms and textured glazes.
She is the most recent winner of the Award for Ceramic Excellence in Sculpture in Context 2018. In 2016 she was winner of a prestigious Future Maker Award from the Design and Crafts Council of Ireland and a Blue Egg Gallery Bursary. In 2015, she was the winner of the RDS Craft Awards in both the Emerging Maker and Ceramics Ireland Categories, and also a Thomas Damman Jr. Trust Award.

She co-founded the multi-disciplinary artistic collective ‘slip.flux.flock.’, The ceramicists of this group were invited to exhibit at the British Ceramics Biennial in 2015 and the core members were invited to show as a group in the Olivier Cornet Gallery Dublin in 2019.
